Science of tattoo removal
When a tattoo is applied, ink particles are deposited deep into the dermis. Because these particles are too large for the body’s immune system to process and eliminate, the ink remains permanently trapped by your white blood cells (macrophages).
Effective removal requires breaking these large pigment clusters into microscopic fragments. Key factors influencing the removal process include:
Ink Depth and Density: Professional tattoos typically penetrate deeper and are more densely packed than amateur tattoos, requiring a highly calibrated approach to clear fully.
Pigment Colors: Darker pigments like black and navy blue absorb laser energy most efficiently and are the easiest to treat. Lighter colors like yellow, green, and light blue require specific, alternating laser wavelengths to break down.
Age of the Tattoo: Older tattoos have often naturally faded and degraded over time, making them slightly easier to remove than fresh, heavily saturated ink.
Location on the Body: Areas with high vascularity (like the face, neck, and upper chest) tend to clear faster than extremities (like the hands and feet) due to more efficient lymphatic drainage.

Because patient comfort is a priority at Pilot Medical Clinic, we administer clinical-grade topical numbing creams prior to the procedure and can utilize localized cooling devices during the session to ensure a highly tolerable experience.

Tattoo removal is a multi-step journey. Depending on the size, color complexity, depth, and age of the tattoo, most patients require between 6 to 12 sessions. Sessions are strictly spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow your immune system adequate time to flush out the fragmented ink.

When performed by a medical professional using advanced Picosecond technology, the risk of scarring is exceptionally low. However, it is important to note that if the skin was already scarred by the original tattoo needle (which is common), that pre-existing textural damage may become visible once the ink is removed.

While black, dark blue, and red inks respond exceptionally well to laser removal, certain colors like bright green, yellow, and pastel shades are notoriously stubborn. During your consultation, we will assess your specific tattoo and provide a realistic expectation of the clearance level achievable.

You can expect the treated area to be red, swollen, and potentially tender—similar to a mild sunburn—for several days. "Frosting" (a temporary white discoloration of the skin) immediately after the laser passes is a normal clinical response. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure safe, rapid healing and prevent infection.
