Milia Extraction

Safe, precise clearance of keratin cysts for a smooth, flawless complexion.

Our Approach

Milia are tiny, pearly-white bumps that most commonly appear on the delicate skin around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead. While they are frequently mistaken for whiteheads, milia are not a form of acne. They are small, deep-seated cysts filled with keratin (a structural skin protein) that have become trapped beneath the surface. At Pilot Medical Clinic, we approach milia removal with absolute precision, utilizing sterile, medical-grade techniques to safely extract these stubborn cysts without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Causes of Milia

Unlike acne, which is driven by sebum and bacteria within a pore, milia develop when the skin's natural exfoliation process is impaired. The keratinized cells become trapped under the epidermis, forming a hard, microscopic cyst. Common catalysts include:

  • Heavy Skincare Products: The use of excessively rich, occlusive face creams or heavy eye creams that the skin cannot properly absorb.

  • Cumulative Sun Damage: Chronic UV exposure thickens the epidermis, making it far more difficult for dead skin cells to shed naturally.

  • Dermal Trauma: Milia can form as a secondary response while the skin heals from aggressive resurfacing treatments, minor burns, or chronic rubbing.

  • Cellular Sluggishness: A natural slowdown in cellular turnover, often associated with chronological aging or a lack of routine exfoliation.

Our Clinical Approach at Pilot Medical Clinic

Because milia are completely encased beneath the skin's surface and have no natural opening, attempting to extract them at home is both ineffective and damaging. Under the guidance of our Medical Director, Dr. Jason Lau, our clinical protocols ensure immediate, sterile clearance.

Our primary therapeutic modalities include:

  • Sterile Needle Extraction (Deroofing): The gold standard for safe milia removal. Using a microscopic, sterile medical lancet, we create a tiny, precise micro-incision over the cyst. This allows the hardened keratin plug to be gently and cleanly extracted with a comedone extractor.

  • Advanced CO2 Laser Ablation: For exceptionally small, clustered, or deeply embedded milia, we utilize a focused carbon dioxide laser to instantly vaporize the roof of the cyst with pinpoint accuracy, minimizing any thermal impact on the surrounding skin.

  • Medical-Grade Chemical Peels: As a preventative and supportive measure, tailored chemical peels (utilizing precise concentrations of AHAs or BHAs) are applied to accelerate cellular turnover, dissolve superficial dead skin, and prevent future keratin entrapment.
